June 26 A Good CopA coupla weeks ago I was driving to work in the morning.
I turned left at Shiv Sena Bhavan and without realizing it, I broke the signal and was flagged down by a traffic policeman at Plaza Cinema.
I knew the drill…smile, speak Marathi, and ask him to take “Dand” (Punishment) and then give him 50 or 100 bucks…it’s always the same.
Well this officer came to my window and I started speaking in Marathi. He was non-Maharashtrian and spoke in Hindi and then looking at me started speaking in pretty decent English.
He told me that I’d broken the signal and could have possibly have had an accident if I was going any faster. He took my license and then told me that it’d be available in 5 days at the RTO office at Mahim.
I smiled and kept asking him to take “Dand”
When he realized what I was asking he said that he did not have the necessary papers with him to take the fine. I kept on smiling and kept asking him. A few seconds later he smiled warmly and handed my license back to me.
I then took out a 100-rupee note to give him.
When he saw this he stopped me suddenly and said, “I did not want to spoil your morning”.
Then joined his hands in namaste and said, “Think good thoughts and do good actions” and walked away before I could say anything else.
“Wow”
That’s all I could think…
We all know how strong corruption culture is in our country. From the lowest levels of the bureaucracy to the highest levels of the government, corruption is an accepted part of our daily lives.
But every so often we encounter a person like this who shows us that there is still good out there, a fact that we often forget in this wild world we live in. Someone who kinda restores our faith and reminds us that we should strive to be good too…another thing we forget in the mad rat race of our lives.
I wish more people like him existed in our world. We could sure use them…
So let’s all make a commitment today to be better human beings…to be honest, warm, loving and do good to the world around us.
And let us take the time to celebrate wonderful people like this police officer. So here’s to a good cop! A good human being.. November 28 An insightful realizationWell last night as I was brooding over how the Indian team are getting their butts whooped I came to a certain realization about why they could not live up to expectations and did not only lose...but were crushed.
Here it is-
While I travelled by a donkey to Aberystwyth I didn't want to sleep, therefore I decided to take a very large dose of nitroglycerin. There came a shoggoth with big glowing eyes, burning embers, & huge tracts --mercifully, unreadable-- of heretical banana splits. Of course, the only absinthe available was made of purest hallucinogenic mushrooms. But I hadn't fully orgasmed since 2002. I didn't know how much "The Accident" would effect my mojo, so I broke out with a Manilow melody!
Why is it so hard for Indians to accept that their team is just not that good. Face it, we're just not good enough...infact we suck. October 23 BloggingI read that blogging is the new craze consuming the planet.
One can only imagine all the sites- like this one, that have come about to ride this new wave. Think about it-Hi5, Blogspot, Myspace, MSN spaces to name a few.
And the business opportinities it presents. One would be wary of advertising online after the dotcom bust back in 2000. But imagine the reach blogging presents...so many people, all across the globe...netizens. And if they have internet access and blogging capability then we are looking at the educated, cash rich segment (dont confuse with super rich). Well it's a new form of interaction to be sure, you can get to know people from all across the world and keep in touch with your firends-at your convienence...only revealing that part of yourself you wish to show. Well anyway...this blogging bit is about blogging, and never was I one not to conform...well my individuality and disdan for the popular only comes about when it can take on an intellectual, elitist flavor I must confess. Does that mean I like to feel better about myself by being superior to other people? You bet! ;-) So here's to blogging and pseudo intellectual chauvanism! September 19 Life is kinky!Literally translated the word dope means a dumb person. It is also commonly used as a name for the narcotic Marajuana. And then it became something good, to describe how good something is, like "This song is so dope!" or "Hows life?-'Dope!' "
Well talk about words becoming unusual adjectives.
Well just like that, there's a new one, used on a much smaller scale ofcouse to describe all good things or fun times-"Kinky!"
The credit for this one goes to my friend Sahil-the captain of kink. Whenever you ask him about something that he percieves as plesant or good his standard answer to describe the object or experience is one word- "kinky!"
"How was your evening Sahil?"
"Kinky!"
"Hows your new car Sahil?"
"Kinky!"
"How was she looking the other night?"
"Kinky!"
Try it, ask him something....
Well right now, I'll borrow the word...cuz life sure is kinky!
Have resumed working out in a new gym which is really nice and am being trained by Sunil Tiroskar...one of the top body builders in bombay. Heck the trainers in the gym were in awe of him when we trained for the first time on Monday. Then work's hotting up and I'm meeting it head on giving a 110%...and loving it! Then today I went for my swimming class to find out that my trainer could not make it, but no matter spent 35 minutes doing some serious swimming. Looks like that 6 pack will come before the end of the year. I wanted to resume salsa this evening, but work got in the way...
I'm so busy and doing so much all the time and simply loving it! So borrowing from my buddy Sahil I must say that life is
"Kinky!" August 03 Breaking ConventionIt's been an interesting week.
With my sister getting married. Action packed wedding, in which I have entertained funny relatives, taken too much time off work, been chased around by psychotic celebrities and been told that even though I'm a kid brother...I'm delicious!
One story deserves a mention in particular. The shoe-stealing episode.
Many darklords are thwarted because of inept, incompetent underlings and I was the victim of this too.
When it was time for Gaurav to remove his shoes and get on the Mandap, I coner him and look around only to see that I am surrounded by his siblings and friends. My team is nowhere to be seen and hours and hours of meticulous planning...down the drain. Yet, I go for his shoes and (literally) go down fighting as I wrestle a guy twice my size (these Punjus are huge) and am tickled by 3 women at the same time (which I admit, was rather enjoyable). So I am publicly humiliated as the boys side makes snide remarks about my inability to relieve the groom of his footwear.
A dark thought enters my mind, and as the wedding progresses and the ceremony is completed, I say to the boy's side that my sister now belongs to them. They all forcefully concur and claim her. I dramnatize the sentiment loudly in front of the packed wedding hall and say that she is now Gaurav's wife first and my sister second, that she is Priya Coulagi no more, she is now and forever Priya Bakshi! To which, I recieve roaring approval and affirmation.
Then once that proclamation is validated...I steal the bride's shoes instead.
People tell me I have backwards, that I fight dirty and dont respect tradation. Say what you want, all I know is that before the night ended, my (inept) cronies and I were a few thousand rupees richer! June 02 He walked back into my life!Thursday morning, I'm roused from my sleep by a phone call.
I don't recognize the number.
It was...him.
He said he was back. Even though I tried my best to maintain my composure, inner joy started to burst out like a Volcano. He said he'd come to my place in an hour, and in a formal voice I said that would be very good. God, if he only knew about the pain his abscence had caused in my life. How I missed him beyond comprehension, beyond anything I had expected.
I got ready and got through the morning, but it felt magical somewhow. And then...I went downstairs and there he was standing, greeting me with a smile, and just like that...after a month of carting myself around town, dealing with asshole drivers, bad roads and parking nightmares...my driver resumed work! |
